Flat Twist Updo – Sparkles Salon Uganda Review

This is a series that I’m absolutely excited to start. A while back, I informed my Instagram family that I will start doing salon reviews mainly because many of you wanted to know the best salons to visit that cater to our natural hair struggles. Starting us up is Sparkles Salon located in Kampala, Uganda. I visited Uganda a few months ago for Natural Hair Uganda’s annual Kinks and Curls expo where I was a guest speaker. The event was out of this world and I had a great time making new friends. Catch a glimpse of what went down here.

I met up with Donnah Masolo, the founder of Sparkles Salon, which is a very popular salon in Uganda. Donna is very outgoing and wears her hair in a beautiful tapered cut. She opened her first salon in Uganda about 15 years ago and has never looked back. She also runs a Hair and Beauty Institute by the name Sparkles Institute that equips young men and women with knowledge and skills to start their career in the industry. If you are in Uganda and you are looking for the best salon to keep your hair healthy and flourishing then you need to make an appointment with Sparkles Salon. They have a total of 5 branches; situated at Oasis Mall, Forest Mall, Garden City, Lugogo Mall and Acacia Mall.

I visited the salon the day after the expo as the humidity had decided not to let my hair prosper. I knew the look I was going for, I wanted my hair cornrowed – something that would require very little manipulation throughout the coming week. I was very exhausted and needed to give my hair a break.

The team at Sparkles salon do not play around when it comes to ensuring their clients are happy with their hair. I was treated like a queen from the moment I walked into the salon. The hairdresser and I went through different inspiration pictures of the look I was going for and settled for a cute Flat Twist Updo with curls. She took me through the variety of product lines they have including Kentaro Organics, Shea moisture etc. and we settled on the Kentaro products. I’ve heard great reviews from my Ugandan fam and this was my opportunity to try them out.

She divided my hair into four sections then prepood and detangled (which is a step most hairdressers skip). I don’t know why they have the tendency to just straight ahead lather the hair with shampoo before coating it with an oil for extra protection. The shampoo process was a breeze! She knew that my scalp needed extra love and cleansing so she gave me a proper scalp massage. She lathered my hair with conditioner then used a wide tooth comb to detangle in sections! (I’m telling you she knew what she was doing). The final step was Deep conditioning and I sat under a steamer for 30 minutes.

After rinsing out the DC, she applied the Kentaro Tee Tree Tingle Leave in Conditioner, sealed with their whipped butter and proceeded to install the flat twists. Please note that she braided my hair while it was damp. Most salons find the need to blow dry the hair prior to braiding which is always not necessary. We had a very insightful conversation about all things hair and beauty and her passion for her work was written all over her face.

The salon is extremely gorgeous. Bright, well-spaced and very welcoming. Sparkles provides a wide variety of services for natural, and relaxed hair clients. The atmosphere is very comforting and they have a professional team who listen to clients’ needs before they start offering services. This is really important!

I would rate my salon experience with Sparkles at 10/10. Yes, I was a very happy client. Her knowledge on natural hair and products was on point, she was able to execute the style I wanted and was very sweet and polite. The entire process took about 2 hours and I left the salon feeling and looking like a million bucks hehe.

If you are looking for a state of the art salon in Uganda then you need to check out Sparkles Salon. Visit their Facebook page and website and make an appointment. Your hair will thank you!

Thank you Donna and the team. Lots of love, Sheila.

Hey Sheila, kindly give me details on where to find dark & lovely au naturale in Nairobi. Also, how much does it go for? Thanks.
Your hair is the bomb by the way.
